raison d’

Le Jardin Potager is a work in progress, it started as a repository of my research and ranting on the things important to me in life – the Kitchen, Garden, other things green, and a little French.

It is the result of the confluence of a number of streams of thought: an impending job transfer – taking us back to Trafford, Manchester, UK, from sunny Brisbane, Australia; the birth of our second child; the prospect of a “clean slate” at a new house and garden; and the overarching environmental concerns that frame our carbon-challenged society. It’s original, slightly frivolous, purpose has recently been overtaken by my discovery of the issues around peak oil, and how constrained our food supply will be in the coming decades.

So rather than just enjoying a little fantasy gardening, I’m starting to look at how we can grow enough to  make a real difference to our quality of life; what skills we need to learn, and who is leading the way in urban and mini-farming. I’ll look at the people and organisations that are helping to make degrees of urban self-sufficiency possible. Plus I’ll try and throw in a few recipes along the way!
